From Catwalk to Color Talk, Lectra Hosts Industry Experts to Discuss Design and Color Management at Parsons The New School for Design(November 04, 2011)
NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 11/04/11 -- Lectra, the world leader in integrated technology solutions dedicated to industries using soft materials -- textiles, leather, industrial fabrics, and composite materials, brought together a panel of industry experts for their Design and Color Seminar on November 2nd, 2011. The seminar focused on challenges faced when working with color throughout the design process and the solutions that leading companies like The Limited Brands, Wal-mart and JCPenney's have implemented to address those issues.
The Seminar began with a presentation from Pantone's Laurie Pressman, Vice President - Fashion, Home + Interiors, showing the latest in colors and trends, as well as, information on what's driving design and creativity in the marketplace.
Pressman, commented that the "theme for Autumn/Winter 2012/2013 is Refocus, a concept that tells us we need to address the different challenges we face with a new mind set and a new approach if we are to succeed. Refocusing is not only necessary in the colors we use but also in our practices, to ensure that we continue to look for fresh and innovative solutions so that we can deliver what the consumer is looking for."
Following the presentation, the panel discussed challenges faced with third-party vendor collaboration such as sharing consistent colors, and the difficulties of working with neon colors to the importance of minimizing lab dips not only in relation to time constraints and cost, but also to minimize waste. James Mendolia, who directs the AAS Fashion Marketing program at Parsons The New School for Design, explained "as part of our teaching efforts, we encourage students to challenge the design and textile world to increase sustainable and environmental practices throughout the design process. Learning about the basics of textile materials and dyeing methods and how they relate to color is a good place to start."
The panel also discussed how to design with color when multiple production mediums are part of your product line. Options from creating a thorough library of possible color production specifications ahead of time, to implementing a process where designers work very closely with suppliers to ensure that all questions are answered as the design process progresses, showed the range of solutions that exist when addressing challenges to working with color.
Rachel Richardson, designer at Regent-Sutton LLC/Moret Group, was the winner of the event raffle, taking home an X-Rite ColorMunki, an all-in-one spectrophotometer, to assist her with color management in her design process.
