FotoKem Invests in San Francisco

Bay Area to Benefit from Combined Resources and Services (August 12, 2009)
DMN Newswire--2009-8-12--FotoKem, one of Hollywood's most established post production facilities, has made a significant investment in the Northern California media community with its acquisition of Spy Post, a San Francisco company known for its work in commercial and feature film post production. The investment represents a natural addition for FotoKem as it steps further into the creative realm and continues to stay at the head of the technological curve by perfecting new file-based workflows, digital intermediate pipelines, and services for new camera technologies.

The two companies will leverage strong technological infrastructures with time-tested industry expertise. As part of its venture and with the addition of key personnel, FotoKem has launched a new Visual Effects business unit, housed within the newly expanded Spy Post facility. Industry professionals will be able to choose from a complete menu of preproduction, production and post production services, including visual effects and design for commercials and feature films.
According to FotoKem's Senior VP of Strategic Planning, Mike Morelli, "This is a logical step in the expansion of our business.  We can now have more of a direct relationship with our clients in Northern California, as well as offer decades of vfx experience to our existing client base across the country.

Spy Post co-founder, Eric Hanson, now VP and GM of the new SF Division remarked, "FotoKem's long term view of the market demonstrates its commitment to our industry.  They have continually diversified their business with key hires, acquisitions, and technological investments to support where the motion picture industry is going, not where it has been.  San Francisco is home to some of the top commercial ad agencies as well as great directors and vfx supervisors and we hope to provide a support system for them close to home with the full connectivity and support of FotoKem's infrastructure in Los Angeles."

All of FotoKem's services will be accessible in San Francisco, available either in-house or through the high speed connection to FotoKem's main campus in Burbank. This includes FotoKem's global data management, nextLAB, stereo digital intermediate services and technologies, and of course, the film lab and post production services. Renovations to the current Spy Post facility, and the installation of the first commercially available stereoscopic DI theatre in San Francisco, will begin immediately.

Founded in 1998 by Emmy Award winning editor Darren Orr and industry veteran Eric Hanson, Spy Post is a successful San Francisco based full-service creative boutique. The company combines seasoned colorists and artists with a state-of-the-art facility that includes a Spirit datacine, da Vinci 2K plus real-time color enhancer, switchable Avid and Final Cut Pro offline-edit suites, compositing and visual effects suites with Flame and Smoke and multiple 2D / 3D workstations for visual effects and animation. Spy Post has worked on nationally broadcast spots, award-winning independent films, and box office leading Hollywood blockbusters.

Established in 1963, FotoKem is a full-service post production facility located in Burbank, CA.  Its long history as one of the top film laboratories and post houses in the world has progressed for the last two decades into the world of high-end digital filmmaking with a long list of credits.
