Former San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein announces resignation from Hearst By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ' Former San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein has announced his resignation from Hearst Newspapers.

The Chronicle reported ( ) Friday that the 61-year-old Bronstein, who has served as editor at large for the past four years, will move into an unpaid role with the nonprofit Center for Investigative Reporting in Berkeley, where he is president of the board.

During his career he worked as a foreign correspondent and his coverage of the fall of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986 was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

He was editor of both the San Francisco Examiner and The Chronicle during a tumultuous time that included the merger of the rival newsrooms. He served as editor for 17 years, leaving in 2008.

In 1998 Bronstein married actress Sharon Stone, the couple divorced in 2004.
