WASHINGTON (AP) ' The former chairman of the District of Columbia Council has pleaded guilty to federal bank fraud.
Kwame Brown, who resigned his seat earlier this week, admitted Friday in federal court in Washington that he falsified his income by tens of thousands of dollars on bank loan applications.
Under guidelines agreed to by the government and his lawyer, Brown faces zero to six months in prison.
He was due in another court later Friday on a separate misdemeanor campaign finance violation stemming from his 2008 campaign.
The local government in the nation's capital has been in turmoil in the last year.
Brown is the second councilmember to resign in six months, and federal prosecutors are continuing to investigate the 2010 campaign of Mayor Vincent Gray.
