Formac Launches 'Accurate Color' LCD

Bundle includes monitor calibrator By Dave Nagel
While some technology experts have already declared the death of the CRT, print professionals have known for some time that you simply can't get accurate color from LCD monitors. But Formac Electronics says its changing all this with the first "color-accurate" LCD display. The package--the Formac Gallery 1740--is actually an LCD bundle that includes technologies from Pantone, Formac and ColorVision, all geared toward producing accurate onscreen colors.

The Formac Gallery 1740 includes Formac's 17.4" LCD display and the Spyder monitor calibrator from Pantone ColorVision. The Spyder is an all-digital, seven-filter colorimeter designed for LCD monitors. It also includes a modified version of PhotoCAL monitor calibration software. The LCD Spyder has seven sensors and seven long-pass filters that allow it to match the human eye response. It also comes with a special accessory for attaching itself to more delicate LCD screens.

"Monitor calibration is crucial in the color management workflow," said Richard Herbert, president of Pantone, in a prepared statement. "This specially priced bundle will provide color professionals with an affordable solution for achieving accurate Pantone Colors."

The 1740 monitor itself is targeted toward professional design applications, including publishing and page layout, print design and CAD/CAM, as well as video editing. Formac says it outperforms other LCD displays with proprietary graphics processing technologies and by using the latest generation of active-matrix LCDs with Fujitsu's Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment technology. The company says colors are displayed accurately at viewing angles up to 160 degrees.

The complete package is available now for $1,149 for the ADC version and $1,199 for the DVI version. We will bring you a review of this bundle in the near future. For more information now, visit http://www.formac.com.
