Formac Intros DVD Authoring Package

External drive bundled with authoring software By Dave Nagel
Formac has launched a new DVD authoring package. The suite, called "devideon superdrive," combines hardware and software for DVD authoring and is designed specifically for the Macintosh.

The new FireWire DVD-R/CD-RW combination drive is bundled with Formac's proprietary DVD authoring software, compatible with Mac OS 9 and OS X running on a FireWire G3, G4, iMac, PowerBook or iBook.

Formac says its devideon software has been developed "with the objective of ensuring maximum compatibility with existing hardware and operating systems...." (The software currently works only with Formac's hardware and uses an authorization process via Formac's proprietary FireWire bridge.) With the software, users can directly adjust the quality of video and audio output and define video bit rates between 1.0 and 9.8 megabits and audio frequencies between 32 kHz and 48 kHz for more than six hours of video on one standard disc. Users can also preview their video projects with Apple's DVD player before burning the DVD. DVDs burned with Formac devideon superdrive can be played on set-top DVD players as well as on computers with DVD drives. The software supports NTSC and PAL video formats.

Formac devideon superdrive will be available this month for $549. For more information, visit http//
