Focus Ships Direct Camera to Disk Device

Device turns FireWire drives into VTR-like digital disk recorders By Dave Nagel
Focus Enhancements has started shipping its Videonics FireStore device, which creates a bridge for turning a FireWire drive into a direct recording device for digital video, including some VTR-like features.

Videonics FireStore converts a FireWire drive into a digital disk recorder and player for recording from a DV camcorder, VTR or mixer directly to the disk. It also allows for capture to tape at the same time. DV streams are recorded to disk as edit-ready files that can be imported and used immediately by most DV based non-linear editing systems without going through the capture process.

The device works with any system that supports FireWire.

FireStore operates as a slave to FireWire-based camcorders, which allows the camera to control recording and pausing. The device also allows the user to play, reverse play, stop, multi-speed fast forward and rewind, single frame forward and backward, next track/previous track and still record. Users can also use FireStore to delete tracks and format and check the disk.

FireStore can handle two-channel (16-bit, 48 kHz) or four-channel (12-bit, 32 kHz) embedded DV audio. Input and output of 25Mb/s DV sources is through a 4-pin IEEE-1394 connector, while the connection between FireStore and the drives is with a single 6-pin 1394 cable.

Videonics FireStore is available now for $995. For more information, visit
