Five Media Composer tricks you can't live without

By Kevin McAuliffe

I've been an editor for a long time, and Media Composer has been one of my tools right from the start, and over the years, I've come across some good tricks to help enhance my workflow.  Some might be obvious once you see them, but others can be a little bit more "hidden".  Here are five of my top five "tricks" for Media Composer.

1. Viewing all of your Collapses.

When editors start creating multiple-layered effects, normally how we like to keep them organized is by collapsing the layers down to one layer.  Other editing applications call this process "nesting", but the problem you run into is that now, to see what is in your collapsed layer, you have to use the "step in/step out" tools at the bottom of the timeline.  Right?  Wrong!

An easier way to do this with your current timeline still visible is to simply go into effects mode, and then double click on the layer.  Now, your sequence will expand up to show you all the layers in  your collapse, and you can even adjust effects that are on those layers if you want to.

 2. Adding Video inside your Titles - AKA the "Rocky" look

I always find that too many editors think that After Effects is the be all and end of of everything.  Don't get me wrong.  I love After Effects, and use it daily, but sometimes I just don't have time to go back and forth between between applications, as my back is normally up against a deadline, and that's where some creative thinking comes into play.  Here's what a basic title looks like in your timeline.

Click PLAY or press spacebar to start or stop video

Now this is just a plain, standard, white title.  What I want to do is replace the white with video.  In most cases, people immediately say "After Effects", and I say "No, step into it!".  Normally the editors reaction is "What?", and I say "Just replace the white with your video, and you're all set to go".  Let me show you.
