First lady visits W. Pa. air unit set to closeMichelle Obama honors veterans, families at Pa. military base slated for closure in 2013
PITTSBURGH (AP) ' First lady Michelle Obama has visited with military veterans and their families at an Air Force base outside Pittsburgh that's slated to close next year.
She didn't make any formal remarks during her brief stop at the 911th Airlift Wing on Tuesday afternoon on her way to attend fundraisers in Pittsburgh.
The first lady hugged military members and posed for pictures with them. She didn't take questions from reporters.
The Air Force says it wants to close the base because the seven C-130 refueling planes there are among the oldest in the fleet.
A number of military members or their spouses who attended the event say they asked the first lady about the base closure, and say she expressed sympathy for them and hopes the base can stay open.
