FirewireDirect Ships Ultra III 800 FireWire 800 Drives

New models offer up to 320 GB capacity By Dave Nagel
FirewireDirect has released a new line of external hard drives, the Ultra III 800 series. The new line offers both FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces and comes in capacities ranging from 80 GB to 320 GB (as well as a 0 GB bare enclosure). The new drives are available now.

The Ultra III 800 is the second FireWire 800 series of external hard drives from FirewireDirect. The first, the StingRay, was introduced last week. The new Ultra II models use the Oxford 922 FireWire 800 chip and offer dual FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connectors. They come in a titanium-style chassis and include FireWire and USB cables and formatting software for Windows and Macintosh.


The new Ultra III 800 models range in capacity from 80 GB to 320 GB and sell for $229 to $549. All of the drives support Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows and are bootable under Mac OS X.
