FirewireDirect Ships FireWire 800 Drives

Stingray 800 offers dual FIreWire, USB 2.0 interface By Dave Nagel has launched a new series of 800 Mbps external storage devices. The new Stingray 800 is a line of drives offering dual FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces in capacities up to 320 GB. The new models are available now.

The Stingray 800 drives come in capacities ranging from 80 GB to 250 GB with 7,200 RPM mechanisms, as well as a 320 GB configuration with a 5,400 RPM mechanism. A bare enclosure is also available. The drives offer an average seek time of 8 ms (7,200 RPM) or 8.5 ms (5,400 RPM); write transfer speeds of 40 MB per second; and read transfer speeds of 51 MB per second. All of the models include a 2 MB buffer.

The Stingray 800 models include a quiet internal fan, according to the company, as well as a built-in power supply. The models ship with a power cord and USB and FireWire 800 cables and also include the Intech Speed Tools disk utility for Mac and MacDrive for Windows, which allows Windows systems to read Mac volumes.

The 7,200 RPM drives range from $235 (80 GB) to $475 (250 GB). The 320 GB, 5,400 RPM drive sells for $540. The bare enclosure sells for $139. All of the models are available now. For more information, visit
