FirewireDirect today started shipping its first 320 GB hard drives. The new SlimLine Ultra III models are available in external configurations with FireWire and USB 2.0 ports.

The new 320 GB drives are available with either a FireWire port or a combination of two FireWire ports and a USB 2.0 port. The 320 GB drives offer a 5,400 RPM mechanism with ATA-100 compliance and use the fourth-generation Oxford911 bridge design. The drives have a 2 MB buffer and offer an average seek time of 8.5 ms with data transfer rates of 35 MB per second for writes and 40 MB per second for reads. Both include InTech's HardDisk SpeedTools 3.5 for Macintosh and appropriate cables and power adapters.

The FireWire version of the drive is available for $469. The combo FireWire/USB 2.0 drive is available for $479. Both support Macintosh and Windows systems. For more information, visit
