Firewire Direct Ships Mach IV

Portable drives offer FireWire, USB 2.0 connectivity By Dave Nagel
Firewire Direct has started shipping a new line of portable storage devices, the Mach IV. The new models offer FireWire and USB 2.0 connectivity and offers up to 80 GB of storage. They're available now.

The Mach IV is the smallest of Firewire Direct's portable drives, according to the company. They use a 2.5-inch drive and measure about 0.5 inches in height. The drives are bus-powered, though they also include an AC adapter, an include connections for FireWire and USB 2.0/1.1. (The FireWire interface can be used with FireWire 800 ports in 400 Mbps mode as well.)

The drives themselves are 4,200 RPM mechanisms, offering a 2 MB buffer and 9.5 ms average seek time. Transfer rates, depending on capacity, range from 16 MB per second to 18 MB per second (write) and 17 MB per second to 20 MB per second (read). All weigh in at 12 ounces.

The Mach IV is available now in capacities of 20 GB to 80 GB for $189.95 to $384.95. A bare enclosure is also available for $95.98. The drives support Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. For more information, visit
