FireWire Direct Unveils Terabyte RAID

New units available in rackmount configurations By Dave Nagel
FireWire Direct says it has launched the first terabyte FireWire RAID configured in a 4U/19-inch rackmount enclosure. The company had previously shipped a similar product in the same line (Epic-DS) in a tower configuration. The new rackmount version is available in two capacities--900 GB and 1,080 GB--and includes support for both Macintosh and Windows.

The device offers a terabyte of continuous formatted data storage and uses the Oxford 911 ATA-100 FireWire bridge. It's targeted toward both digital video professionals and IT applications.

According to the company's own benchmarks, the Epic-DS (tested on a Macintosh G4 867 MHz, RAID 0, dual-channel) has sustained read speeds of 48,281 KB per second, with a peak of 52,265 KB per second. Write speeds are 39,383 KB per second, with a peak of 40,855 KB per second. Average access time is 8.6 milliseconds.

The 1,080 GB Epic-DS rackmount is available now for $5,995. The 900 GB version is available for $4,575. For more information, visit
