FireWire Direct Ships FireWire Hardware RAIDs

New systems independent of CPU By Dave Nagel
FireWire Direct has released three new FireWire-based RAID systems. The company was the first last year to ship a FireWire RAID. But the new models offer an independent controller that, according to the company, does not rely on the host system's resources.

The new RAID lineup, called the Vanguard series, offers three two-drive models, ranging from 160 GB to 240 GB in capacity. They support RAID level 1 and NRAID and will work with Macintosh, Windows, Solaris and other systems that support FireWire.

The Vanguard models use a metal casing and have a locking door drive bay, cooling fans and a suspended design hard drive tray that minimizes hard disk vibration. It's hot-swappable and, in the event of a hard disk failure, will allow full access to one volume while rebuilding the RAID 1 mirror.

The Vanguard 160 GB model is available for $975.95. The 200 GB model is available for $1,275.95. And the 240 GB model is available for $1,475.95. For more information, visit
