FireWire Direct Ships Battery-Powered Drive

Self-powered model available up to 40 GB By Dave Nagel
FireWire Direct has begun shipping a new line of portable FireWire drives called Spark EP. The new models, targeted toward notebook users, include their own battery for power and come in capacities up to 40 GB.

The Spark EP models run on their own battery power to preserve the battery of the host notebook. It can remain on while being moved, even when it's not connected to a computer, and will automatically recharge itself when it's connected to a computer's FireWire port or an AC adapter.

The case is about 0.75 inches in height and includes two FireWire ports. It uses an Oxford 911-based ATA-5 FireWire interface and comes in capacities of 10 GB, 20 GB, 30 GB and 40 GB. It includes an AC adapter and a six-pin/six-pin FireWire cable. The models run $149 to $389, depending on capacity. For more information, visit
