FireWire Direct Intros Vanguard SCSI System

SCSI RAID available in capacities up to 960 GB By Dave Nagel
FireWire Direct has announced their first non-FireWire RAID product, an Ultra3 SCSI system for desktop and rackmount configurations called the Vanguard Ultra. The new system is an Ultra3 SCSI RAID targeted toward animators and video professionals who need faster throughput than FireWire allows.

The system, according to FireWire Direct, is "specifically designed for non-linear video editing, 2D/3D animation, game development and data throughput needed for demanding applications like HD playback and capture." It features a RISC processor and hardware RAID controller with 256 MB of cache. It supports RAID 0 (striping), 1 (mirroring), 0+1, 3 and 5. In levels 3 and 5 it can employ a hot spare drive available to automatically restore redundancy.

The Vanguard system is available in capacities of 600 GB, 800 GB and 960 GB and supports Mac, Windows, Solaris, Irix and other operating systems with basic SCSI support. For more information, visit
