Final Cut Pro Quick Tip #48

Setting up Control Surfaces in Final Cut Pro (and Soundtrack Pro) By Stephen Schleicher

In previous versions of Final Cut Pro, you didnt have the ability to connect a MIDI controllable audio board to your system.  With Final Cut Pro 5, Mackie and Logic control has been implemented.  Never again do you need to use an unintuitive mouse to create your mix.  This Final Cut Quick Tip shows you how to set up a Control Surface in Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro.

The Set Up
The first thing you need to do is make sure you have a MIDI to USB, or Midi to Firewire, device connected to your Mac, and the Mac is recognizing the set up.  This can easily be found under Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup.  There are many MIDI to USB devices available and even an Edirol UM-1S from 2001 works in my setup.  If you already have a MIDI device working with your system, then you are set.

Im a big fan of Mackie products, and when I discovered the Mackie Control Universal (MSRP $999) now supports Final Cut Pro, I plunked my money down.

Making it Work
Launch Final Cut Pro 5, and from Tools menu select Control Surfaces.

From the pop window, click on the + (Plus) symbol to add a control surface.

The new window that opens allows you to select the Surface Type from a drop down list.  If your MIDI and Control Surface devices are recognized, they will show up automatically.

Select the Control Surface, and click OK.

Click OK again to close the Control Surface window.
