Final Cut Expands Its Reach To The City Of Angels

Creative editorial company opens Los Angeles office (April 28, 2005)

Final Cut, an award-winning creative editorial company, has opened a Los Angeles location. The expansion marks a natural growth for the company, which currently has offices in London and New York City. The LA office launches with two new additions: Partner/Lead Editor Eric Zumbrunnen and Executive Producer Saima Awan, as well as Editor Jim Weedon who comes over from the NY site.

The decision to open a Los Angeles location is an outgrowth of the stateside success of the New York office, which is led by Editors Gary Knight, Sarah Iben and Carlos Arias. The three have contributed to many high profile and compelling projects, and Final Cut as a company is answering the demand for more creative collaboration from local agencies and clients.

?Having established a well-respected and creatively exciting New York cutting room, we found that many clients wanted us to be more locally available to the Los Angeles market, comments Rick Russell, Final Cut Founder/Editor. ?Weve been working consistently on the West Coast, but have been temping out of other peoples spaces. Even though weve made this work seamlessly up to now, we feel the necessity to have a proper base in LA to facilitate even more of a bi-coastal workflow.

?Weve maintained strong relationships with directors and agencies in LA over the years and want to provide an environment that is reflective of our companys ethos and personality, adds Stephanie Apt, Final Cut President. ?Having three locations gives us a tremendous amount of flexibility and enables us to serve any market. In addition, weve found that there is more hands-on involvement from LA-based directors in the editing process when we work with them in their home turf. We want to continue building and fostering relationships with both production companies and agencies in Los Angeles.

The company will offer an interchangeable roster of editors that can move between locations depending on the needs of the project. This versatility is especially helpful in situations such as when a job starts in one location and then moves during the production. For Final Cut, the goal is to start the West Coast cutting room with two editors and then expand when the demand dictates.

Editor Eric Zumbrunnen is well known for his work in commercials, feature films and music videos. He has collaborated with Director Spike Jonze on a myriad of projects for the last 11 years, including videos for Weezer and Fat Boy Slim, both of which garnered MTV Editing Awards, as well as the feature films Adaptation and Being John Malkovich for which he won a 2000 American Cinema Editors Award for Best Edited Feature. Zumbrunnen was most recently at Spotwelders where he contributed to spots for Ikea, Levis, Adidas, Citibank, Microsoft, Nike and Porsche, to name a few. Zumbrunnen views Final Cut as a place where new talent can be nurtured and promoted, and up-and-coming editors are provided with the prospects to make that happen.

?Im excited to be a partner in Final Cut, says Zumbrunnen. ?There are so many opportunities afforded by having offices in three cities. It puts us in contact with interesting people and projects all over the world, and gives us the flexibility to move between locations as needed. Rick [Russell] is a talented guy and we share the same vision that Final Cut needs to be a global company in order to compete and thrive. For me, it is also great that this company supports and understands my work in films. I get the best of both worlds doing movies and advertising at the same time.

Saima Awan comes on board as Executive Producer for Final Cut LA where she will launch the LA office. Awan most recently worked with Final Cut/New York as freelance producer on various projects including HPipod out of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and Fox Sports out of TBWA\Chiat\Day/SF where she collaborated closely with President Stephanie Apt. Previously, she was the Senior Producer at Bob and Sheilas Edit World from 2000 until it closed in 2003 and a producer at Red Car for three years. Awan first got her start in postproduction at Graying & Balding and found that it opened the door to many avenues of postproduction.

?We look forward to establishing our LA presence, comments Awan. ?Los Angeles offers us the opportunity to continue to build our relationships with clients, agencies and production companies. LA is still the hub of the filmmaking and production community and we want to further Final Cuts identity and reputation here. Im excited by my new role and the opportunity to work closely with Eric (Zumbrunnen) and Jim (Weedon).

Editor Jim Weedon, who has been working in the New York office since 2003, will also make the move to Los Angeles. Weedon recently cut spots for Reebok, Coors, NetZero, Rolling Rock and Allstate.

?Los Angeles is a market that we havent truly explored, and it is a good one to tap into, notes Weedon. ?There are many great production companies in LA, as well as effects and sound studios. Its nice to be closer to these businesses and to strengthen our rapport with them. And Im looking forward to getting some LA sunshine. I think we will really capitalize on Final Cuts reputation when we come to California. Our arrival will be a wake up call to other editing companies -- we are coming!

About Final Cut
Final Cut/London was founded by Rick Russell in 1995. Over the next few years, the company grew organically and added talent, as well as editing suites. By 2000, Final Cut boasted a roster of five top editors and several gifted assistants en route to becoming editors. The New York location was opened by Stephanie Apt and was a response to increased client requests for work done on US jobs and the conviction that the particular roster of editors would be an interesting and fresh addition to the New York advertising industry.
