Family mourns Utah boy killed by mini toy cannon

Family mourns Utah boy killed by miniature toy cannon; 14-year-old was mechanically inclined By The Associated Press

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) ' Family members and former classmates say they're still in shock after 14-year-old Utah boy died while playing with a miniature toy cannon.

Lucille Hertel tells the Deseret News (http://bit.ly/zUeMEC ) her grandson, Robby Ostberg, of Tremonton , was shy but mechanically gifted.

Police say he was playing with the toy in his living room Monday when the cannon went off. The boy was struck in the face and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hertel says the boy sometimes wrapped gunpowder in tin foil and fired it a few feet away with the cannon, which is described as an 18th century replica with a 6-inch metal barrel and a wooden base.

Hertel says the boy's father didn't know Ostberg had access to gunpowder.

A funeral is set for Friday.
