Facilis Shows TerraBlock 4.1 with Cross-platform Direct Ethernet Connectivity

(September 11, 2009)
DMN Newswire--2009-9-11--Facilis Technology, a leader in shared media storage technology for post-production and content creation, today announced that TerraBlock 4.1 with direct Ethernet support for Windows and OSX will be demonstrated at IBC in Amsterdam. This release represents the latest deployment of the Facilis Shared File System, first shipped for Windows fibre channel clients in June 2009.

Through the 4.1 release, standard 1Gbit Ethernet clients will access Facilis Virtual Volumes in Multi-user Write mode (file-level) directly, without the need for a bridge server. Ethernet connectivity removes the need for client-side hardware upgrades, and expensive fibre channel infrastructure for clients using compressed HD or standard definition video. This feature set can be used in conjunction with high-performance 8Gbit fibre channel connectivity on the same network, and even the same Virtual Volume.

"Ethernet connectivity to the Facilis Shared File System provides desktop and laptop clients the same access to the TerraBlock network as the high-performance fibre channel clients. Through a custom shared file system protocol, we avoid the limitations found in most network-attached storage systems," says Francis Albert, president and founder of Facilis Technology. "Direct Ethernet clients will communicate as if connected over fibre, with full dynamic access to the Virtual Volumes."

Through use of traditional Single-user Write mode, TerraBlock provides HD 4:4:4 and 2K DPX playback simultaneous with collaborative Multi-user Write project and media sharing capabilities. Volumes may be designated as Single-user or Multi-user Write for the ideal combination of performance and workflow.

TerraBlock 4.1 is planned for release in early Q4, followed by the OSX fibre channel release in late Q4. With concurrent direct Ethernet and fibre channel connectivity, TerraBlock shared storage has one of the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for post-production facilities in the television, film, graphics content creation, encoding and digital distribution sectors.
