Fabrication Films and A FiLM BY Welcome New Directors

Buddy Cone and the Konwiser brothers join rosters (January 19, 2005)

Production company Fabrication Films and satellite company A FiLM BY are pleased to announce the addition of Directors Buddy Cone and The Konwiser Brothers to their rosters. Cone will helm spots under the Fabrication Films banner while The Konwiser Brothers will direct through A FiLM BY. Steve Johnson serves as Executive Producer of both companies. Ellen Knable of EKA continues to oversee national sales and marketing as Head of Sales.

?What attracted me to Buddy was his background as an art director, explains Steve Johnson. ?He is one of the few directors Ive seen that can art direct and tell a story in 30 seconds.

?The Konwiser Brothers have an energy and ability, as demonstrated in their documentary work, that will crossover into short format projects, Johnson continues. ?They bring a certain vitality and really seem to get the entertainment business, which will translate well into commercials.

?Since I launched Buddy off as a new director, Im happy to be associated with a talent like him for a second time around, remarks Ellen Knable. ?Also, introducing the Konwiser Brothers to the commercial world is a great opportunity for both my clients and Kern and Kip [Konwiser]. Its exciting to be part of this growth of Fabrication Films and A FiLM BY.

Buddy Cone comes to Fabrication Films with a bevy of experience in directing effects-driven spots, as well as extensive background in production design. Most recently, he was at Chelsea Pictures where he directed projects for UPS, Mailboxes, Etc. and Rawlings. Cone realized his penchant for effects spots during a six-year tenure at Palomar Pictures, honing his skills and helming commercials for Skittles, Maytag, Southwestern Bell and Super Bowl spots for Budweiser and AutoTrader.

Launching his career in small budget features and miniseries, Cone moved to feature films working as the art director on Rob Reiners The Sure Thing and William Friedkins To Live and Die in LA in collaboration with production designer Lilly Kilvert. He later was the production designer for another William Friedkin picture, Rampage, and for the TV pilot ?The Wonder Years where he set the look of the show.

His big break into directing commercials came after several successful projects as a Production Designer for Mark Coppos of Coppos Films. Cone began helming his own commercials, which included such high-profile clients as Oakley, VW, Lexus and Nissan.

Cone cites his longstanding relationship with Ellen Knable, and the reputation of Steve Johnson and the directorial talent as reasons for joining Fabrication Films.

?Ive known Ellen since my days at Coppos Films and its wonderful to be working with her again, comments Buddy Cone. ?Fabrication Films has a lot of faith in me; I really appreciate their enthusiasm and like the direction in which the company is headed. Ive always had a passion for the commercial business, and am excited to explore opportunities in long-format projects. My intention is to be an effective storyteller no matter the format. I believe this is the start of something exciting.

Fabrication Films also provides commercial representation for Directors James Wahlberg, Alexander von David, Munier Sharrieff and Eugene Yelchin.

Also joining the team are The Konwiser Brothers who will direct via satellite company A FiLM BY, which currently represents Gary Johns. Kip and Kern Konwiser are award-winning filmmakers, producers, writers and musicians with numerous credits and awards to their name. The two have wide-ranging experience in the entertainment industry having worked on theatrical films, documentaries, cable and network movies and series, as well as numerous music DVDs and CD-ROMs.

Their production of the 1997 HBO/NYC feature film, Miss Evers Boys, based on the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play, was released to record-breaking critical success, including five Emmy Awards, three Cable ACE Awards, three NAACP Image Awards, The National Educators Award for Excellence in Programming, a Humanitas Prize, the Grand Prize at the New York Film Festival, a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Made-for-Television Movie, and the Producers Guild of America Producer of the Year Golden Laurel Award.

Since then, the brothers have lent their directorial talent to documentaries for Burton Snowboards, Showtime Networks and Nike, ESPN, and Spyglass Entertainment/Disney Pictures and Canal Plus, among others. In addition to producing independent and feature films, TV series and DVDs and CD-ROMs with notable music artists and entertainment icons including Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana and Crosby Stills Nash & Young, The Konwiser Brothers produced a national campaign for Tomy Toys, as well as a series of commercials for the non-profit educational group Cable in the Classroom, which won multiple Cine Golden Eagle Awards.

?We truly thrive in the client service business of filmed entertainment and are excited to bring our years of experience into an organization such as Fabrications A FiLM BY division in order to explore this terrific opportunity, comments Kip Konwiser.

?Im excited by the challenge of the 30-second story, concludes Kern Konwiser. ?Every frame is critically studied and I want to openly master the art of the commercial. Its a great time to enter into commercials. The business has evolved; it is less about selling products and more about philosophy and appealing to emotions. Some of the best stories are told in 30 seconds.

Kip Konwiser started his career as a development executive at Twentieth Century Fox for Producer Laurence Mark (Working Girl, My Stepmother is an Alien). Kern Konwiser began as a writer and directing apprentice for John Herzfeld (Don King: Only In America, 15 Seconds).
