Extensis Unleashes QX-Tools Pro

QuarkXPress suite gets new import, FTP, collection and preflighting functions By Dave Nagel
Extensis has released QX-Tools Pro, an upgrade to its suite of tools for QuarkXPress. QX-Tools Pro is a collection of productivity XTensions for Quark 4.11 through 5.0. It's available only for the Macintosh, though neither Quark nor QX-Tools Pro is yet OS X native. However, both will run in the Mac OS X Classic environment.

QX-Tools Pro includes four major enhancements to the suite. These include QX-Import, which now allows for the import of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint documents into QuarkXPress without the need to recreate the documents. Each page is imported as an EPS image with the same attributes as the print preview window in the respective parent applications.

It also includes QX-Shortcuts, which helps locate, search and organize the more than 350 shortcuts available in QuarkXPress.shortcuts and execute those commands used most frequently.

The collection also includes an XTension called QX-Collect&Send, which, as its name implies, collects files for output and ensures that all of the necessary files are present prior to sending the job to the service bureau. It collects all fonts and images (including fonts and images used in EPS files) from a QuarkXPress document, preflights the document and allows users to upload files to their printer's FTP site. Users can also create shortcuts for various FTP sites.

QX-Tools Pro includes a free, single-user subscription to Extensis Preflight Online, which allows users to preflight their QuarkXPress 4 jobs before sending them to the printer. QX-Tools Pro offers a limited number of standard inspection profiles that flag common output errors. A fully customizable version of Preflight Online is available to users for an additional price.

QX-Tools Pro is available now for download from the Extensis Web site for $199.95 for the full version. Upgrades from previous versions are available starting at $59.95. French and German versions will be available in the second quarter of 2002. QX-Tools Pro supports Mac OS 8.6 through 9.x and is fully compatible with Mac OS X Classic environment and operates with QuarkXPress 4.11 through 5.0.
