Expert: NH officials handled school shooting well

Family life expert praises NH officials for handling of elementary school cafeteria shooting By The Associated Press

WALPOLE, N.H. (AP) ' An expert who has responded to hundreds of cases of youth violence in U.S. schools and communities says officials in Walpole, N.H., have done everything right since a 14-year-old student shot himself in a cafeteria last week.

The boy survived Friday's shooting at Walpole Elementary School, where counselors and crisis workers from around the state have been helping students and staffers cope.

University of New Hampshire family life specialist Malcolm Smith was part of a team that spent Monday at nearby Charlestown Middle School, where students also were shaken by the boy's shooting. He says compared to other places he's been, Walpole's response has been perfect.

School officials have provided counseling. They have temporarily closed the cafeteria and plan to completely remodel it.

A prosecutor says the boy might have been upset about a relationship with a girl.
