Exclusive: Sorenson Squeeze Pro Q&A with Eric Quanstrom, COO of Sorenson Media
Tell us about the Sorenson Squeeze 8 Pro release.
Squeeze 8 Pro is a professional version of Squeeze where we have really targeted the video editing community. We have created a solution that allows them to work with many different formats, and Squeeze will now transcode into the most popular mezzanine / intermediate formats - Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD - so that they can easily pull files onto and off of their timeline and transition easily between editing systems.
What specifics can you tell us about this new offering?
There are basically three main new features or formats in Squeeze Pro compared with the standard version. These include Avid DNxHD, which is that company's intermediate codec used by a majority of Avid editors on both Windows and Apple operating systems; Apple ProRes encoding, which is used by editors using Final Cut Pro and other Apple editing systems; and two audio enhancers. The first is Dolby Pro Plus - a pro version of the AC3 audio codec, which allows you to go to 5.1 surround sound and produce professional audio. The second is an audio sweetening program from BIAS called SoundSoap.
It is also important to note that with these new formats we are able to offer bit depths up to 12 bits (Apple ProRes 4444). Bit depth refers to the color space associated with any video and the bit depth is the depth of color that is supported. We are thrilled to be able to provide user color depths that rival any in the industry.
What led to the launch of this new product?
Squeeze Pro is truly the result of listening intently to our customers and providing them the features and formats that are most useful to them. We understand that Squeeze sits in the middle of many video editor's workflows, and being able to transcode files coming into an edit bay, as well as trade files between various different editing programs, is more and more sought after these days. We have been getting many requests for this type of functionality and we're delighted to be able to bring it to our loyal user base.
Can you describe more how this helps a video editor's workflow?
Sorenson Squeeze 8 Pro is an ideal solution for many post production teams that work with and between Avid editing systems and Apple editing systems-and others too! All of these people are trading files all day long, and getting files into common formats to work together can often be a big challenge. Squeeze 8 Pro now provides a solution that makes these systems and formats interoperable. With Squeeze, users can essentially use it to input and output the formats that they are using on their editing timeline.
In a nutshell, it provides users a much more streamlined way of working and increases the functionality across platforms. We are bullish that enormous groups of video editing professionals are going to find this to be a huge benefit for their workflows.
What is the pricing structure?
Off the shelf, Squeeze 8 Pro is available for $999. Otherwise the Avid DNxHD, Apple ProRes or Adobe Audio Pro Add-On's can be purchased at $99 apiece. The full version is ultimately a better value as we have bundled all of them together with the very popular Squeeze 8.
As video increases in popularity across so many platforms and devices, how will innovations from Sorenson Media like Squeeze 8 Pro help video professionals reach their audiences where they are watching?
It's really about having the best tools for the job(s). Tools like Squeeze that enable you to do so much with your videos-all with high quality-in an automated fashion. Squeeze's ability to handle anything you can throw at it, produce amazing results and even deliver video, whether through Review & Approval or on a public website with Sorenson 360 (free for Squeeze users) is such a dynamic workflow, which we are constantly improving and refining.
