Exclusive: Matrox OS X Drivers Due End of May

Beta drivers for RTMac shown at NAB By Dave Nagel
A little more than a year ago, Matrox said it was getting set to release Mac OS X drivers for its RTMac video capture and editing board. The target date: second quarter 2002. Well, as all RTMac owners are keenly aware, this never happened. However, the company said at NAB that its public beta drivers would be released by the end of the month. And now Matrox is offering users further hope: a possible full release by end of May.

In February Matrox announced that Mac OS X drivers had entered into a limited private beta stage with a "small group of RTMac users." And last week at the NAB convention in Las Vegas, Matrox told users--yours truly included--that the Mac OS X drivers would be available in a public beta form by the end of the month.

Since that time, I've been in contact with Matrox, and just today a company representative provided updated information on the Mac OS X development. When asked when the full release of the Mac OS X drivers would come, she responded, "We hope by end of May." As of press time, Matrox has not included this information in any support documents on its site or otherwise. "RTMac continues to be the only solution to offer full-resolution, NTSC/PAL previews, regardless of the power Mac G4 model," she added. "We are happy to join the ranks of manufacturers supporting OSX."

No further information was available at press time, and the company wouldn't comment on whether further Mac OS X products were in the works concurrent with the development of RTMac drivers. Of course, we'll continue to keep you updated as information becomes available. For more, visit
