Ex-Maine lawmaker admits pulling loaded gun on stranger in parking lot, gets 45-day sentence By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) ' A former Maine legislator will serve 45 days in jail on charges of pulling a loaded gun during a confrontation with a stranger in a doughnut shop parking lot.

Former Republican state Rep. Frederick Wintle pleaded guilty on Thursday to criminal threatening.

A lawyer for the 59-year-old Wintle said the incident in Waterville last year was a result of mental illness that Wintle was treated for shortly afterward.

He was arrested in May and resigned from the Legislature in September.

Wintle will serve his sentence starting April 17. The Kennebec Journal ( reports that if he avoids criminal problems and meets certain conditions during a 12-month period, he can withdraw his felony plea and plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge.
