Ethics case in Mass. worries defense attorneysEx-treasurer charged in Mass. case; where to draw the line between politics and governing?
BOSTON (AP) ' A tough new ethics law in Massachusetts is being put to the test for the first time. And some defense attorneys worry the case could make it difficult for politicians to figure out where the line lies between campaigning and their official duties.
The case involves former state Treasurer Timothy Cahill, who was charged on Monday with running taxpayer-funded commercials for the state lottery to promote his unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2010. As treasurer, Cahill was in charge of the lottery.
Massachusetts' attorney general says Cahill abused his position in violation of a 2009 ethics law. Cahill denies any wrongdoing.
Some defense attorneys say this case could open up politicians to prosecution for just about any act in office that could enhance their careers.
