Etan Patz case a decades-long, winding probeWinding, lengthy investigation in case of Etan Patz; investigators continue digging in NYC
NEW YORK (AP) ' The investigation into the disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz in 1979 has stretched through decades and countries, from basements to rooftops and seemingly everywhere in between.
No one has been charged criminally. And the little boy with sandy brown hair and toothy grin was declared dead in 2001.
The case suddenly ran hot again this week after a decade of silence. A cadaver-sniffing dog picked up a scent in a basement near the boy's home. Authorities have ripped up concrete, carefully setting aside rubble for examination in the hope of finding the remains of the boy ' or any evidence that would spur them on.
It's not clear what, if anything, they'll find, but the investigation has reached similar highs before, only for the trail to go cold for years.
