Erotic Los Angeles

Electronic Toys are different in Hollywood By John Haley
There are many images that may be conjured up when you hear the words "Erotica LA". You might think that you are about to read an inappropriate, and possibly "not work safe" article, but I can guarantee you that I will keep this article as clean as possible.

When I got the assignment to cover a convention in Los Angeles, I thought that it would be the standard technical or "Hollywood" fare. However, when I found out it was "Erotica LA", I was expecting -- well, all of the stereotypical fantasy stuff. However, it wasn't much different from any other Expo or tradeshow convention.

The first day of the show started a little bit late for me, but this wasn't about arriving early for the big release schedule for me. For some it was all about business, finding out what were the new trends. For others it was about seeing old friends and business acquaintances again, and for others it was almost like a giant retail store, full of sexual devices and videos -- complete with your favorite model or movie star there to sell the product.

Like other trade shows, event is a maze of different vendors selling their wares. All of them have booths which attempt to tower over the neighbor's, or out glitz (or out girl) the others.

I was there to see what trends in Electronic personal devices might be new - or to see if there was an aspect of High Def video that moved through the industry... the cute girls were definitely a plus.

One of the main things that seemed to go on at the show was the ability to meet and get an autograph from your favorite adult film star.  This year, you got tokens for the privilege of getting  a photo with the stars.  Of course, there was a lot of cash passing between attendees and their favorite players too.

Similar to other mega corporate shows (and believe me there is still a ton of money in the adult industry), walking around the show takes a toll on your legs/feet.  However, unlike other venues, when you sit down at Erotic LA, there's a chance you'll see pole dancing... but wait - it's for a company that sells poles that you can install in your house... no tech. moving on. As I moved deeper into the convention center, there were some other toy vendors.  But again, the good old fashioned analog kind.  Whips, buckles, all kinds of silicone.... But Then I found the electronics that were clean enough (to mention).

If you are into PC games, and if you are a fan of Grand Theft Auto. There is a new game which I even got to play for a little bit, this one if a tad bit more drug orientated. With the unique name of BoneTown you are an Ass Kicking Superhero. Where you run around town on missions with extra special fighting moves.

I found this game some what comedic - - more of a silly cyber adventure-porno you walk around in.  This isn't Leisure Suit Larry, this is a real adult/hard-core video game.

Should have known from the title of the game! Currently they don't offer a Macintosh version, and are still working on porting it over.  They do have a downloadable version for $10 bucks off. (adult content: http://www.bonetown.com/) - Featuring Ron Jeremy!

Despite all of the men falling over themselves to get next to pretty women, don't think this show didn't think about the women. A company called OhMiBod, certainly didn't forget the important demographic! Finally a few electronics around the show. Their product couples with a device you may already own: an iPod or iPhone.  Definitely electronic on one end. (adult content: http://www.ohmibod.com/)

Not everything was "adult entertainment" orientated though. FREEDOM Laser Therapy was there. I was pretty amazed that they now have a way to quit smoking with laser therapy. I am not a smoker myself, but I pretty amazed from what she was describing.  I suppose 35 years of research must have some positive results for enough people to keep it going.  (http://www.freedomasertherapy.com)

Of course, if you want to keep smoking, but don't want the fire, you could electronically smoke.  Huh? Yeah.  I don't understand it totally, but the company produces a smokeless cigarette-like thing. NJOY e-cigarettes are a revolutionary new smoking alternative that looks, feels and tastes like a cigarette or cigar, and gives smokers all the pleasure and satisfaction of traditional smoking without all the health, social and economic problems.  But there is real nicotine in some cartridges - so they're for adults only.  Not a gimick or to help you kick the habit. Although it was smaller than other conventions of its kind, I'd say the entire show was a good turnout for the companies who were there.  Like other businesses in the current economy, the adult entertainment industry isn't enjoying the same kind of success it has in the past, but it's important for trade shows like this one  to educate buyers, retailers, and their audiences.  The major companies want you to know that they're coming up with better product for their consumers all the time.
