Ergotron Neo-Flex LCD ArmA solid and flexible LCD desktop monitor mount
Ergotrons Neo-Flex LCD Arm ($99 MSRP) is designed to hold flat panel monitors up to 18 pounds, with multiple positioning angles. It attaches to the edge of a desk with a sturdy clamp that can be securely tightened or even permanently installed with an included grommet-mounting kit.
Once installed, the Neo-Flex arm offers very flexible viewing angles, both vertically and side to side. The entire arm can be rotated 360 degrees, and the monitor can be angled 180 degrees right or left. This is a welcome feature for situations where a group of people needs to view one monitor. It can even be used for landscape views, turned to any angle desired.
With an 8-in. vertical adjustment, its easy to position the monitor face in a comfortable desktop viewing position. And once its set in place, it stays thanks to a secure locking mechanism. To move the monitor to a new vertical position, you depress a large button at the elbow of the arm and release it when the desired position has been found. The monitor should be supported with one hand while adjustments are being made, as it will move freely until locked.
The Neo-Flex comes fully assembled with an extension arm in place. This arm allows the monitor to extend 8 inches horizontally toward the viewer. But for tighter spaces, it can be removed. The main arm can then be screwed right into the base.
I used it to attach a Samsung 19-in. LCD flat panel that had two sets of screw holes for different mount sizes. The Neo-Flex arm is designed for VESA MIS-D, 100/75, compliant LCDs, and attaches to the back of the monitor with four screws. Its advisable to clamp the Neo-Flex arm to the desk first, and then attach the monitor to it.
A series of plastic loops on the arm is intended for threading cables. If you read the manual in advance, you will know this. Unfortunately, I didnt, and I snapped these plastic loops off, assuming they were packing material. But after that ill-advised move, I was still able to use the cable-threading scheme by substituting twist-ties for the plastic loops. The arm has holes positioned for this purpose.
One of the things that impressed me about the Neo-Flex arm was how smoothly it moves from side to side, or when its being rotated. It has an industrial feel that inspires confidence. The motion can be made easier or harder by tightening or loosening Allen head screws on the arm (a wrench is included).
Ergotron is a 25-year-old Minnesota-based company that specializes in mounting devices for digital displays. Its products include wall and desk mount arms, desk stands, mobile carts, floor stands, pivots and vertical lifts. I havent tried any of their other products, but based on the solid design of the Neo-Flex LCD arm, Id be inclined to in the future. The Neo-Flex is a little more expensive than some other solutions on the market, but in my opinion the quality difference is worthwhile. Id recommend it to anyone seeking a heavy-duty and flexible desktop monitor mount.
