Epson Shows 7-Color Archival Printer

Stylus Photo 2200 replaces 2000P By Dave Nagel
Epson today introduced the latest model in its series of printers that use archival inks. The Epson Stylus Photo 2200, which replaces the 2000P, is targeted toward photographers and uses seven inks rather than six.

Epson calls the ink system in the 2200 "UltraChrome" and says they're designed to produce a wider color gamut than previous printers. UltraChrome inks are the latest generation of Epson's Archival Inks, which are pigment-based rather than dye-based, and build upon technologies used in the Archival and DuraBright inks. The inks have a lightfastness of 100 years (black and white) on fine art papers and 80 years on Epson's Watercolor paper.

The printer also features new interchangeable black inks, offering a choice between standard Photo Black and matte black. (The Matte Black ink supports matte paper only and yields higher density and contrast on matte papers.)

The Stylus Photo 2200 offers a resolution of up to 2,880 x 1,440 DPI using 4 picoliter droplets, which produces an equivalent dot size to a 2 picoliter dye-based droplet. The printer uses Epson's Micro Piezo inkjet technology and offers print sizes up to 13" x 44". The printer also features 4", 8.3" and 13" edge to edge borderless printing on roll paper using Epson's border-free printing utility. A roll paper holder is included with the printer, as well as a built-in automatic cutter.

The new printer includes Epson Film Factory with PRINT Image Matching support. There are also several special software offers, including discounts on MonacoEZcolor 2.1; Corel KnockOut 2.0 and KPT Effects; Nik Color Efex Pro! and Sharpener Pro!; and Extensis Intellihance Pro 4.0 and PhotoFrame 2.0.

The 2200 is compatible with Macintosh and Windows systems and will be available in July for $699. For more information, visit
