Epson Launches Pro Scanners

New Perfection models offer 3.8 Dmax, expanded transparency capacity By Dave Nagel
At the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Epson introduced two new models in its line of Perfection scanners. The company says the new models--the 4870 Photo and 4870 Pro--are targeted toward design professionals and will be available in early February.

The new Perfection scanners both offer FireWire and USWB 2.0 connectivity and provide 4,800 x 9,600 DPI scanning at 48 bits and with a 3.8 Dmax rating. The 4870 Photo and 4870 Pro replace the earlier 3200 Photo/Pro models, offering a new 6" x 9" transparency unit with a moving light source for scanning 35 mm slides and negatives and 4" x 5" transparencies for up to 24 frames--twice the capacity of the 3200. Other features include Digital ICE technology from Kodak/ASF, Epson's Easy Photo Fix technology for color restoration and dust removal and ColorTrue II Imaging.

The Perfection 4870 comes bundled with LaserSoft SilverFast SE 6, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2, ABBY FineReader Sprint OCR and new Epson Scan software with Easy Photo Fix. The Pro version also includes MonacoEZcolor 2.5 and ArcSoft PhotoStudio, PhotoBase and Panorama Maker.

The Perfection 4870 Photo and 4870 Pro will be available in early February for $449 and $599, respectively. For more information, visit http://www.epson.com.
