Encore Hollywood Posts Japanese Ad Campaign for CanonColorist Arnold Ramm Sets Soft Look for Spot Featuring Kids in Kiss Make-up
Encore Hollywood recently provided post production services for a new Japanese advertising campaign for Canon promoting its EOS Kiss Digital Camera. Colorist Arnold Ramm performed final color correction for the ad titled We Need Kiss. The ad features kids made up like ‘70s rock icons Kiss singing a version of their hit I Was Made for Lovin’ You, which has been given new lyrics. The bus driver, also bedecked in Kiss make-up, flips a switch that causes the bus to sprout enormous jet engines and it speeds away.
The commercial was produced by the international production company Protean Image Group and shot at Universal Studios over three days. Ramm performed final color correction before the project returned to Japan for visual effects and final post work. “We color corrected all of the production footage, not just selected takes, to give them maximum flexibility in editing the spot,” said Ramm.
In an unusual technique, Ramm placed a filter between the gate and the CRT in the telecine system to give the film a soft look. “The filter we employed had the smallest amount of diffusion possible,” said Ramm. “It was just enough to take the sharp edges off things and make the image glow.”
For effects sequences, Ramm prepared two or more passes and used the color corrector’s windows function to affect specific areas of the image. “We used both the physical filters and windows to balance the yellow of the school bus and other bright colors, while maintaining the intensity of the image.”
