Encore Hollywood Creates “Hole” New Look For LifesaversProvided color correction services for pair of computer-animated spots (July 15, 2004)
Encore Hollywood provided color correction services for a new pair of computer-animated spots for LifeSavers that imagine a world where parts of nature have taken on the candy’s distinctive shape. Colorist Mike Cosola gave the surreal spots a touch of reality by applying a filmic look to the computer-generated imagery. Roman Coppola directed the spots for Foote, Cone & Belding, New York.
One spot shows a fairy tale meadow dotted with cherry trees. When the camera moves in for a closer look, the cherries are seen to have holes. The voice-over promotes new, sugar-free LifeSavers, noting, “at last, that true cherry taste has no sugar carbs.”
Cosola’s task was to enhance the spot’s slightly-more-beautiful-than-life look by making subtle adjustments to light and color values. “We wanted to make the environment appear more like a real place by adding texture and dimensionality to the animation,” he explained. “We didn’t want it to seem too CG, too clean. We reined in some colors, while letting others pop through.”
The second spot, has a different tone, presenting a nighttime winter scene of a house nestled in a snow swept forest. Here, the snowflakes have adopted the LifeSavers hole. “We used Power Windows to give the lighting direction and the soft quality of moonlight,” Cosola said. “We added a dynamic to the snowflakes so that they really glow, and pushed the glints and highlights.”
