Encore Hollywood Adds Magic to Flash Campaign for Napster
Encore Hollywood recently provided a complete package of post production services for a new, national commercial campaign for the online music service Napster. The package included three Flash-animated spots, conceived by Napsters in-house team and produced by the Watermelon Company, targeting different segments of the music buying public. The spots promote Napsters pricing advantage over rival IPod with the tagline, ?Do the Math. Encores services included color correction, file conversion and final compositing.
The three spots target hip hop, heavy metal and country music fans respectively and each one begins with a short Flash cartoon before segueing into Napsters pricing offer. The Flash animation was created by Geoff McFetridge, best known for his work in designing the main title sequence for the film The Virgin Suicides. McFetridge is also the creator of a series of Flash animation shorts called Napster Bits available on the Napster website.
?The commercials are very much in keeping with the spirit of Napster Bits, explained David Duarte, head of production for the Watermelon Company. ?They are fun little stories with just enough edge to break through the clutter. Original music for the campaign came from DJ Melo D, of Los Angeles hip hop radio station KDAY, Mackie Jayson, of the seminal punk band Bad Brains, and up and coming country crooner Austin Hanks.
Encore Hollywood compositor used a Discreet Inferno system to convert McFetridges Flash files to digital video format. Colorist Mike Cosola then colored the spots in a tape-to-tape environment using a Da Vinci 2K color corrector. ?We pushed the colors just a bit to give them an exaggerated feel, said Cosola. ?But we remained within the familiar Napster color palette that is dominated by greens and blues.
Additional graphics were added during a final conform as the spots were readied for broadcast. ?Encore performed exceptionally well for us?their short form team continues to steamroll forward, said Duarte. ?Mike has a great eye and always adds something to the project that we hadnt imagined?he brings the magic.
