Elgato Unveils HDTV Digital Video Recorder For the Mac

EyeTV 500 for ATSC digital terrestrial television in the US (June 30, 2004)

Elgato Systems today announced the release of EyeTV 500, the first high-definition television (HDTV) solution for Mac OS X, specially designed for the thriving North American digital terrestrial television (DTV) market. EyeTV 500 allows users to watch, record, timeshift, edit and archive free over-the-air HDTV and digital standard-definition television (SDTV) on the Mac. EyeTV 500 is a FireWire-powered, 100% digital, fully HD capable solution, based on Elgato's proven EyeTV 400 technology.

"We have designed EyeTV 500 in line with the growth and success of free over-the-air HDTV services in North America", says Freddie Geier, Elgato's CEO. "Mac users can now enjoy free prime-time programming from the major US broadcasters (including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, UPN, and WB) and all in TV image quality never seen before on the Mac."

EyeTV 500 appears at a time when the transition from analog to DTV is gaining tremendous momentum.

"Our popular consumer applications, high performance graphics and audio technology and Apple's renowned ease of use, make the Mac platform the perfect hub for today's digital lifestyle," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "With EyeTV 500, users can receive more than 20 HDTV and SDTV channels and enjoy exceptional viewing quality by taking advantage of the stunning Aqua user interface in Mac OS X."

Digital television offers a much higher resolution and clarity than analog TV, and comes at up to 4 times the resolution of DVDs. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has mandated that it replace analog TV, and broadcasters in the US are well on their way to achieving this objective. Currently, there are more than 1200 DTV stations serving close to 100% of US TV households (source: fcc.gov).

EyeTV 500 allows users to:

- Watch free digital terrestrial television (ATSC) on their Mac.

- Pause, rewind or fast forward through television as they are watching.

- Record television to the Mac's hard drive, creating an archive of their favorite shows.

- Program EyeTV 500 through the manual control panel or Electronic Program Guide (EPG) from TitanTV. Users can even program EyeTV remotely via the Internet.

- Edit out unwanted content using EyeTV's built-in editor that easily identifies where programs and scenes start and stop.

- Archive programs to DVD or VideoCD, to play anywhere on most standard DVD players.**
