Electronic Arts Scores Lord of the Rings Games

Exclusive deal gives EQ game console, handheld rights By Denise Harrison
Itís been a good winter for EA Games. They landed a deal with LEGO for co-publishing and marketing more than 30 LEGO software titles on a minimum of four platforms over the next three years. They are bringing James Bond 007 Agent Under Fire to GameCube and Xbox (itís already available for PlayStation2). They shipped the SIMS Hot Date expansion pack and The Simpsons Road Rage game for PlayStation2.

And now theyíve landed the granddaddy deal of the year - Lord of the Rings.

EA gets exclusive rights for the games on consoles (sounds like all three), and handheld devices. EA will launch the first of their games in Fall 2002, in time for the release of the second movie in the trilogy, The Two Towers. Other games are TBA.

Whatís interesting is why they waited until the second movie in the trilogy to release a game rather than taking advantage of the frenzy during the first film, in theaters now. We couldnít get an answer in time for publication, but weíll pursue it with the companies. With games being pretty high on the list of expected holiday purchases, it looks like a missed opportunity.
