Electric Rain Releases Swift 3D 3.0

Flash renderer adds new ray tracing, vector options By Dave Nagel
Electric Rain has shipped Swift 3D 3.0, a new version of the company's stand-alone application for converting 3D files into vector-based Flash animations and images. The new version uses the RAViX III render engine and supports output to native Flash and other vector formats. It's available now for Macintosh and Windows.

The new render engine in Swift 3D 3 adds a number of new output options for the Flash format. These include transparency on indiviidual objects, reflectivity on materials, gradated highlights (specularity) on low-bandwidth styles and multiple shadows.

The new version also includes SmartLayer technology. SmartLayer, according to Electric Rain, works in conjunction with the Swift 3D Importer plugin for Macromedia Flash MX to render 3D for import into Flash MX libraries with various aspects of the scene broken out into individual layers. It can render separate layers for colors, lines, shadows, highlights, reflections and transparencies and create separate layers for stationary and moving objects to eliminate duplication of static frames and reduce the overall size of files.

Other new features in version 3.0 include:

  • The EMO Ray Tracer, which allows for the use of bitmap textures within 3D scenes. It supports photographic rendering output with transparency, reflection and refraction.
  • Path Animation for shape morphing of extrusions and lathed objects.
  • Convert text to paths for font customization and morphing.
  • Scene Hierarchy for creating parent/child relationships and complex animations.
  • Auto-shape tools for extrusion modeling.

Swift 3D 3.0 is available now for Macintosh and Windows. It runs $169 for the download and boxed CD version. Upgrades from previous versions of Swift 3D are $89 with a limited time offer to upgrade for $79. For more information, visit
