Editor Neil Gust Signs With Outside EditorialThe eye of a graphic artist and ear of a profession musician bring signature style to his work (January 17, 2006)
Sila Soyer, Executive Producer for Outside Editorial, has announced that editor Neil Gust has joined the SOHO-based editorial, visual effects, and design boutiques collaborative talent roster.
?As the next crop of editors emerges in the industry, I believe Neil is going to distinguish himself as a major talent, says Soyer. ?His strong visual style and design sensibility is musically driven and gives his work a unique signature.
?Neil has the eye of a graphic artist and the ear of an accomplished, professional musician, adds editor Scott Gaillard, Outsides founder. ?He approaches editing through music and then aligns the images and text in rhythmic harmony to create visual experiences the likes of which Ive never seen before.
Gust recently collaborated with Gaillard on an expansive package of commercials and cinema spots for Jaguar, which tapped his ability to seamlessly integrate his skills as an editor, designer and musician to raise the creative bar.
?I always start with the sound, he acknowledges. ?Cutting is like putting a song together; I find it easy to break up a spot and find the parts where I want the story to move through. Its fun getting it to dance to the music. My goal is to create something natural, where nothing feels forced.
Its no wonder that music plays a key role in Gusts editing: Music has been a major force in his life and career. A musician since the age of eight, Gust moved to Portland, Oregon following his graduation from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts to join the band Heatmiser with Elliott Smith. There he was instrumental in creating the voice and tone of ?90s band. More recently Gust produced two albums with his own band, No. 2, which are available on iTunes, and he has begun writing as a solo artist.
After six years with Heatmiser, Gust joined Portland creative studio Johnson & Wolverton. He soon moved up through the ranks to become a production artist, working on a long roster of prestigious print and design accounts. When the companys projects began to include video components, Gust found that editing was a natural extension of his skills.
?The process of editing seemed a lot like recording music, which is something I had been doing since I was a teenager, says Gust. ?It was time based and I found it easy to understand.
For the next eight years Gust honed his skills as editor and graphics animator at Johnson & Wolverton where he helped the principals define and realize their unique visual style working on a long list of projects, including promos and interstitials for The Sundance Channel, and projects for Showtime, BBC, Food Network and Comedy Central.
Earlier this year Gust moved to New York where he took on a number of freelance jobs, including Euro RSCG Fuels Jaguar campaign, which he worked on with Outsides editing and design teams. Gaillard was so Impressed with Gusts talents and his contribution to the project that he asked him to join Outside Editorials staff.
?I really had no sense that the type of cutting I was doing at Johnson & Wolverton -- very aggressive, fast, full of a lot of things would appeal to the industry at large, says Gust. ?Being offered a job at a company of Outsides caliber was the last thing I expected! Its great to be part of a young team that enjoys pushing the creative envelope. Its a lot like being in a band. Editing and music work best when theyre collaborative and theres chemistry.
Gust, who will man Outsides new Apple Final Cut Pro room, joins senior graphics designer Jaime Lamond, Inferno/Flame artist Steve Mottershead, graphics designer Riccardo Sinti, senior editor and Outside founder Scott Gaillard, and editors Scott Gibney, Steve Evans and Jeff Ferruzzo on Outsides staff.
