Edirol Intros UR-80 Recording System

All in one box offers USB MIDI, audio interfaces By Dave Nagel
Edirol has announced its forthcoming UR-80 recording system. The UR-80 is an all in one system designed for audio and MIDI production and recording. It will be available for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows early summer.

The UR-80 incorporates a fully assignable control surface with MIDI and audio interfaces, for recording up to 24-bit, 96 kHz audio. It offers 102 assignable parameters via 43 controls, with unlimited support for any MIDI parameter, including CC, RPN, NRPN and SysEx. It has two XLR/TRS combo jacks with Phantom power and a microphone preamp. The UR-80 also comes bundled with Hyper Canvas synthesizer software and UR-80 Control Map software and supports ASIO 2 and WDM. And it includes V-Link for control of the Edirol DV-7PR video presenter.

Edirol has also introduced the UA-1000 1U rackmount audio interface for Windows systems. The device is built around USB 2.0 and includes four front-mounted XLR/TRS combo jacks; analog microphone preamps; S/PDIF (optical/coaxial); eight-channel ADAT; MIDI; and Word Clock. It also offers four inserts (I/O) for effect sends and returns. With USB 2.0, the device offers 10 in and 10 out channels at 24-bit, 96 kHz with full duplex.

When contacted regarding future Macintosh support for the UA-1000, an Edirol representative said, "That remains to be seen. We have to guage the interest Apple has in implementing USB 2.0. I assume they will make the jump to 2.0 in the near future, but our developers will likely not consider implementing driver support for OS X until USB 2.0 is planned to be integrated directly into Apple systems. " (All of Edirol's other current audio capture devices are available for both Macintosh and Windows, with all but one also available for Mac OS X.)

The UR-80 is expected to ship this summer for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows for $549. Pricing and availability for the UA-1000 have not yet been announced. For more information, visit http://www.edirol.com.
