Echo Boys Appoints Bethany Lacktorin Audio EngineerFirst female engineer at commercial music and sound design house. (May 24, 2004)
Echo Boys has announced that audio engineer Bethany Lacktorin has been signed by the Minneapolis-based commercial music and sound design house. Lacktorin joins founders Tom Lecher, Harry Pulver, Jr., Bob Millea and Randy Anderson, executive producer Kathy Yanko and composer Alex Berglund at Echo Boys where innovative music and sound design solutions for clients such as Goodyear, Porsche and Purina have earned them a national reputation.
?Echo Boys takes an unconventional approach to their craft, notes Heidi Habben, executive vice president at sister company Crash & Sues. ?The talent composes as a group, performs instrumentals as a band and relates to each project as filmmakers as well as musicians. Bethanys diverse background and talent make her a perfect fit with Echo Boys and give her an appreciation of our slightly askew sensibilities.
?Im glad to be joining the Echo Boys roster, Lacktorin states. ?The company has a very solid reputation in music and audio-for-video. The guys are completely committed to creativity and innovation. Its the ideal place for me to combine my background in music and my technical skills in audio editing and mixing. Aside from that, Im pretty psyched to be the first female Echo Boy ever.
A Minnesota native who has built her audio post career in Minneapolis, Lacktorin was employed as audio editor and mixer at CookHouse Recording Studios from 2001 to 2003 and at Hi-Wire Post Production from 1999-2001. She spent the past year freelancing at Absolute Music and Babble-On Recording Studios.
Lacktorin attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin where she majored in performance art and composition and trained in classical violin. She became a violin instructor for Minnetonka Community Education Services, teaching violin to students of all ages. She later went on to earn her Associate of Applied Science degree for Music Production at Musicians Technical College in Minneapolis.
Lacktorins talents most recently came into play when she contributed music and sound design for the :30 spot, ?Buck Fush, in participation with MoveOn.orgs Bush in 30 competition. Along with providing sound design and mix services for a number of local independent films, Lacktorin has engineered for an array of advertisers including Best Buy/Sam Goody, Northwest Airlines, Long John Silvers, Nordstroms, Marshall Fields, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and Associated Bank.
Lacktorins work outside the walls of the studio brings a fresh perspective to spot projects. She sings and plays keys in her electro-pop duo with African percussionist Aaron Barnell. Currently their collaboration involves imposing Lacktorins song structures on Barnells live looping process. ?You have to plan every move, she says. While she performs the song, Barnell accompanies by combining electronic sounds with his own percussive arsenal into a constantly-evolving loop.
?We do a lot of waiting for technology when it comes to creating, Lacktorin notes. ?I took a lot of time exploring and experimenting with different sound engines before Id tinkered around enough to know I was in love with the whole process.
Lacktorin will be independently releasing her first album, ?Bethany, on August 20. The double CD will feature electronic versions of her songs plus acoustic versions of the same compositions performed with Aaron Barnell. The CD will be available for sale at www.bethanymusic.cc and at Minneapolis-area record stores.
Lacktorin believes her role as a performer enhances her versatility at Echo Boys. Since joining the company she has already completed the latest Buell Motorcycle campaign, Best Buys ?Big Dreamer spot, Malone Goodyear spots, Blue Cross & Blue Shield spots and a No Name Steaks campaign.
