Doctor: Drowned woman's heart problem was fixed

Doctor says Ala. woman's heart problem was fixed before she drowned during honeymoon trip By The Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) ' A doctor says an Alabama woman had a heart condition that was diagnosed and fixed two years before she drowned during a honeymoon diving trip in Australia.

Dr. Farrell Mendelsohn says he considered Tina Thomas Watson to be cured of an irregular heartbeat in 2001. She died in 2003 while diving with Gabe Watson, her husband of 11 days.

Watson is on trial on a capital murder charge in her death. He's already served prison time after pleading guilty to a manslaughter charge in her death in Australia.

The doctor testified for prosecutors in an attempt to blunt defense claims that the woman's death may have been linked to health problems.
