Discreet Releases Cleaner 5.1

New version improves MPEG output By Dave Nagel
Discreet has released its first update to Cleaner since purchasing the software from Media 100 a couple months ago. Cleaner is a software package (Macintosh and Windows) for encoding streaming media content and preparing media for distribution on the Web, VCDs or DVDs. Media 100 sold the software, along with several other products, to Discreet in order to concentrate on its core video editing platforms.

The new version of Cleaner, aside from taking on Discreet's own branding, receives a few feature enhancements. These include the addition of the Sorenson 3 video CODEC (including two-pass variable bit rate encoding), improved MPEG output and support for Windows XP. Still no word on when a Mac OS X version will be released.

The company also says that overall encoding speeds have been improved.

Aside from various MPEG formats for audio, VCD and DVD, Cleaner outputs files for streaming or progressive downloads in QuickTime, Windows Media and Real formats. The new version is available now for $599. For more information, visit
