Discovery Signs Global Distribution Deal For New DVD Platform

Discovery Consumer Products, the retail, publishing and licensing arm of real-world entertainment giant Discovery Communications, Inc., today announced a new global alliance with 3-PLUS, Ltd. for the development and distribution of youth-oriented DVDs under the banner of Discovery DVD Kids.

The strategic partnership will join Discovery Channel's world-class nonfiction programming and a new interactive system for children from the Reykjavik, Iceland-based, 3-PLUS. Kenton Selvey, Vice President of International Sales & Marketing for Discovery Consumer Products and Helgi Sigurdsson, Managing Director for 3-PLUS, made the announcement.

"This partnership creates an exciting new way for kids around the globe to explore their world," said Selvey. "3-PLUS takes an innovative approach to creating and delivering content to younger audiences that showcases Discovery Channel's informative and entertaining programming to its best advantage."

The Discovery DVD Kids line will utilize 3-PLUS's groundbreaking Image-Remote system, a kid-friendly handheld device for DVD players that enables young children to control and interact with specially designed content. Discovery Consumer Products will work with 3-PLUS to develop a special line of DVDs for children from 3 to 9-years of age incorporating a range of genres including natural history, space and exploration. These DVDs work in conjunction with graphically-designed cards that slot into the front of the Image-Remote and allow children to easily interact with the specially-formatted DVD programming.

3-PLUS will manage the distribution of the Discovery DVD Kids product line which will be sold through retail outlets worldwide. The first Discovery DVD Kids titles will rollout initially in France and Germany beginning Quarter 4, 2001.

Discovery Consumer Products expands the Discovery experience to its worldwide audience through a broad array of entertaining and informative products and services. These include a US chain of 170 Discovery Channel retail stores, Discovery-branded licensed products, a robust online shopping business (, educational product offerings and strategic third-party retail and merchandising partners. These offerings reflect the core Discovery programming genres of science, nature, history, technology and exploration.
