Disc Makers Opens New World-Class Mastering Studio

New mastering suite at the SoundLab takes post-production to next level (November 09, 2004)

Disc Makers, the nations largest CD manufacturer for independent artists, has completed a major upgrade of its in-house mastering facility, the SoundLab at Disc Makers. The new suite will provide independent artists with world-class post-production and a final product that rivals the quality and consistency of projects coming out of todays top studios.

?We were looking to upgrade our facilities to provide an even higher level of production quality and service for our customers. Many musicians still dont realize the benefits of professional mastering, and end up making a mistake by skipping this important step, explains Tony van Veen, Disc Makers Vice President of Sales and Marketing. ?We wanted to upgrade our technology so that our SoundLab would remain truly world-class, but keep prices at ?working musician levels--starting at just $390 for post production for an entire album.

For the project, Disc Makers turned to one of its own employees, Jon Marc, who, as an accomplished studio professional, had designed and consulted on the building of studios for DJ Jazzy Jeff, NBA Superstar Rasheed Wallace (Direct Hits Studio), former NFL star Blair Thomas (Excalibur Productions) as well as a host of other facilities in the tri-state area.

?With the new studio, we decided it would be best if we started from scratch, explains Marc. ?We chose Dynaudio M3 monitors for their known clarity and extended frequency response then placed them on 1000 lb concrete blocks coupled to our buildings foundation for accurate bass reproduction. The outer walls contain three completely sealed layers of dry wall with a middle resilient channel for optimum sound isolation and bass absorption. We designed a custom absorptive interior skin for the room with soffit integrated bass traps that removed any parallel surfaces, eliminating flutter echo and other unwanted artifacts. The walls were then outfitted with custom-designed curved wood diffusion panels that were added to the sides and back of the room to produce desired reflections to the sweet spots and improve spatial imaging.

As for the equipment, the new SoundLab suite uses both SADiE and Sonic Studio and is loaded with digital and analog processing gear from top manufacturers such as Weiss, TC Electronics, Apogee, George Massenberg Labs, Avalon Designs, and Focusrite, and is outfitted with Dynaudio Acoustic M-3 speakers powered by Chord monoblocks.

?The new SoundLab is a world-class listening environment with incredible bass response, says Marc. "Our mastering engineers and clients response to projects completed in the room are so positive, that we plan on redesigning all of our rooms."

Disc Makers Audio Engineering Manager Paul Elliott agrees. ?The atmosphere and acoustics definitely went up a notch. With a flat frequency sound response down to 50 Hz, the new room and equipment allow us to be just that much more effective during our mastering sessions. We can trust our speakers and ears a little bit more and make better decisions on how to effectively convey the projects message.
