Director Jennifer Little Signs with A Band ApartIt marks the first time Little has had U.S. representation (February 15, 2006)
Award-winning director Jennifer Little has signed with A Band Apart for exclusive representation in the United States for commercials. It marks the first time Little has had U.S. representation. A native of Canada, Little has won numerous awards for her commercial work there and also has an active career in directing episodic television in Canada.
A Band Apart managing director Jeff Armstrong said that he was impressed by Littles ability to direct talent and added that her experience in television, live theater and other mediums suggests she will have a very productive career. ?I was drawn to Jennifers work because she shows great restraint and allows the story to breathe without rushing to the gag and tag lines, said Armstrong. ?She also produces clean, contemporary film in both her advertising and her entertainment work. She is a perfect fit for A Band Apart, a diversified entertainment company working across a variety of mediums in partnership with our directors.
Little said that she had received offers from other U.S. production companies but found that A Band Apart provided the best path to both her short term and long term goals. ?They have a very strong presence in the commercial market, which is my immediate focus, she said. ?I also like their philosophy and I like the fact that they have an interest in other media. Most importantly, they get what I am after.
Little holds degrees in acting from Ryerson Theatre School and in film and philosophy from the University of Toronto. She worked as a camera operator and assistant director on a variety of feature film and television projects and also directed several short films, including one that screened at the World Film Festival in Montreal. She signed her first directing contract with Apple Box Productions in Toronto and created an immediate stir when her first spot, The Big Tiff, for Moule Designer Gifts and Toronto agency Rethink won a Bessie Award for Direction. Since then, her work includes spots for Ford (Young & Rubicam, Vancouver), and the British Columbia Lotto (TBWA, Vancouver), among others. She also directed a spot promoting the Bessies and has served as a judge for the show.
Little directed two episodes of the reality series Crash Test Mommy for Canadian broadcasters Atlantis Alliance last year and is currently set to direct four more episodes. She is represented by Circle Productions for Canadian advertising work.
Littles work as a director is informed by her early experience as an actor, and has consistently demonstrated an ability to elicit powerful performances from talent. ?I have an affinity for actors and spots with dialogue, she said. ?I like real-life spots especially when they are witty. I am drawn to actor-driven, realistic spots.
