Digital Re-Recording Without Converters on De-LovelySolution connects Nuendo to Euphonix System 5-F dubbing console (June 23, 2004)
The movie, 'De-Lovely' is an original musical portrayal of American composer Cole Porter filled with his own unforgettable songs. When it came to the dubbing stage, Sound Supervisor and Re-Recording Mixer, John Ross, decided to validate a new and straightforward approach to playback. This was accomplished by employing multiple Nuendo PC's each fitted with an RME PCI MADI card connected directly to the Euphonix System 5-F console.
John commented on his first dub using the Euphonix System 5-F and Nuendo, "I am a big fan of both Steinberg and Euphonix and I wanted to do the effects and dialog post entirely in Nuendo then mix on the System 5-F at Todd-AO West. The connectivity was such a simple and elegant solution, three coax cables for 168 channels from the RME PCI MADI cards directly into the System 5. It worked - and it sounded great. This is big departure from the standard playback system on stages where racks and racks of computers and converters are needed for a couple of hundred tracks."
He continued, "In the early 90's when I owned Digital Sound and Picture, I was one of the first to embrace the Euphonix CS Series consoles. It was great to see how far things have come with the System 5-F. I was up and mixing the first day and never looked back. This is truly an amazing step forward in workflow."
Three Nuendo applications running on dual AMD processor-based machines, each with an RME MADI card, were split as dialog, effects and foley, and backgrounds. Charlie Boswell, marketing director of AMD's Digital Media & Entertainment group commented, "The AMD Opteron processor places unprecedented processing power and reliability at the fingertips of the post production engineer." He added, "The result is creative freedom without the limitations of 32-bit only systems. AMD is proud to team with Euphonix and Steinberg as together we deliver solutions for the worlds most demanding artists and professionals."
A fourth Nuendo was used for picture playback of the DV-AVI files. John Ross explains some of the advantages, "For a start it's very easy to roll in three PC's and connect with just three coax cables for audio and one for sync giving you 168 outputs. They lock up to the DVI picture and the System 5 faster than anything I have seen before. We pre-dubbed onto an MMR-8 then transferred the files back in synch to the Nuendos so we had all the original tracks plus the pre-dubs in each machine which made it very easy to get right back down to original files when necessary. If I did it again, I would record back to the same Nuendos directly, as the new Time Base from Steinberg allows full control from the System 5-F recorder controls."
The movie opens in theaters on July 2nd. 'De-lovely' is directed by Academy Award-Winner Irwin Winkler and stars Oscar-Winner Kevin Kline, Ashley Judd, and Jonathan Pryce in addition to some of today's biggest rock and pop music stars.
