Digital Dimension Wins VES Award for ABC's LostAward-winning studio honored by Visual Effects Society for unforgettable plane crash sequence (February 23, 2005)
Digital Dimension, a leading visual effects studio, was honored by the Visual Effects Society (VES) at the 3rd Annual VES Awards held in Los Angeles on February 16th, 2005. Digital Dimension won the "Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Broadcast Program" for their work on part 2 of the pilot for ABC's hit television program, Lost.
Digital Dimension's Benoit Girard, in-house visual effects supervisor and founder, and Jerome Morin, executive producer, were both given awards for the companyıs impressive effects work. The riveting plane crash sequence created by Digital Dimension became the establishing shot for the entire premise of the show. In the sequence, the viewer sees the interior cabin of an aircraft that has presumably been struck. The plane's tail is torn off, as passengers, chairs and debris fly into the rear of the cabin and out of the plane.
The original plate included little more than five rows of jostled passengers shot in front of a green screen. Digital Dimensionıs work involved extensive compositing, sky replacement and CG work?building debris, chairs and the tail extension of the plane. The effects were achieved using a toolkit that included Eyeon's Digital Fusion for compositing, Discreetıs 3ds max for modeling and animation of elements.
"Working on this show was an honor in and of itself. Lost has become a runaway hit and we loved the opportunity to build the establishing shot," said Benoit Girard, President of Digital Dimension. "Winning the award from the VES was icing on the cake with a project like this one. The VES award is one that we hold in the highest regard, knowing that we were selected by a jury of our much respected peers in the effects industry."
