Digital Dimension Provides VFX for Mr.& Mrs. Smith

Creats 26 shots using 2D compositing and 3D visual effects for new Angelina Jolie film (June 14, 2005)

Visual effects studio Digital Dimension recently contributed a series of high-powered visual effects for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a June 2005 release from New Regency Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox. Digital Dimension created 26 shots for the movie, which features explosive chemistry, literally, when a husband and wife (played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) each discover that their partner in life is also a lethal assassin.

A mountain sequence in the movie's first quarter and the final, suspenseful sequence of the film are among the shots completed by Digital Dimension to heighten the action. The mountain shot involved a sophisticated blend of virtual camera techniques, texture mapping and texture displacement to place CG geography invisibly into a rock climbing scenario lensed via helicopter. The finale sequence heats up the screen with RPG rocket blasts created and added in 3D.

"This show was a thrill ride throughout," said Marion Spates, Production Manager, Digital Dimension. "The director, Doug Limon, has a keen eye for intriguing action, and Visual Effects Supervisor Kevin Elam steered his vision quite clearly for us to create some pretty dazzling effects."

Digital Dimension's artistic team on the project included: Visual Effects Supervisor Ben Girard, Visual Effects Executive Producer Jerome Morin, Visual Effects Producer Chris Del Conte, Digital Compositors Daniel Rubin and Ryan Smolarek, Rotoscope and Paint Supervisor Tammy Sutton, Visual Effects Production Manager Marion Spates, Production Coordinator Taryn Kelly, Visual Effects Production Assistant Anthony Kramer and Digital Effects Artists Christian Zurcher and Mitch Gstes. 2D compositing was completed in Eyeon's Digital Fusion for 2D with 3D modeling and animation crafted using Autodesk 3ds Max.
